At the foot of a valley created by the Rapidan River in the Shenandoah National Park, is a camp built by Herbert Hoover as a retreat from Washington D.C.'s hot, humid summers. A series of cabins have been restored, together with several outbuildings though most of the presidential camp has been lost to decades of decay and neglect. Standing off-center from a cabin used by British wartime leader, Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill, is a large outdoor fireplace around which "campers" would while away the cool, evening hours.
